That's what I'M talking about!

In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, you can read more about it here: Easy Photo Biz.

Anyhow, that's not the reason I'm posting....
=============================================

The reason for my post is this:
While I was away, one of my subscribers emailed me and asked about my workflow. More specifically, what programs I used and why.

So, I shot him (thanks Dennis) back some reading material, essentially an email that was a book about why I use a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.

For those of you not in the know, Photoshop has been around for ages now and seems to be what I would consider an industry standard. Most pros that I know use Photoshop or Lightroom, and if you're serious about being a pro this is a brand that you'll have to get used to hearing about.

With that said, Dennis asked me if I knew anywhere that he could get some more info on Photoshop. Well, not wanting to be one of those guys that says "Google it" I went ahead and looked up a few courses that he could use.

I thought that you might find them helpful as well.

The first one is called Learn Photoshop Now and is one of the most comprehensive Photoshop courses/blogs/tutorial sites that I've ever found.

Sign up and you'll get a few tutorials, some freebies, and a whole bunch of information that will have you more proficient in Photoshop than 95% of the people out there.

The second one is called EditYourDigitalPhotos.com and it's just as good as the Learn Photoshop Now, only it's a little more advanced, and focuses specifically on editing photos.

Both are GREAT resources for ANY photographer, so check them out if you're serious about making photography your full time gig... because post processing is one of the requirements of the job ;)

Multiple Streams of Photography Income

I've been in the game for a while, not nearly as long as a lot of professionals, but long enough to learn a thing or two about the business.

Today, I was talking to a friend of mine that is a newer photographer trying to start up a business and the issue of income came about. He asked me:

"Where do you make your money?"

I was a bit perplexed at first because the answer seemed obvious to me. I make money shooting assignment gigs, or selling prints.

After I thought about it a little bit though, I came upon an idea that I had learned about a while ago as I was reading some business books. It was an idea that I had never implemented due solely to being to focused on just starting a business.

It's simple, yet very difficult.

Generate income from multiple streams.

When I went into photography, I had a one track mind really; Make a living. That meant: get gigs, sell photos, get more gigs, sell more photos. I think a lot of photographers may thing the same way (correct me if I'm wrong here).

What I overlooked was the potential for automated income and the multiple streams that I could potentially be getting paid for.

So, I've been sitting around for the past couple of days now, trying to restructure a portion of my business to be more geared towards 3 things (with an explanation as to why below).

1. Multiple Streams (i.e. stock, sessions, staff work, print sales, etc.)
*Should one stream run dry, it effects my total income far less than if I were to lose all of my business. For instance, if all streams were to contribute 10% to my total income, and one dried up, I'd only take a 10% decrease in income rather than if I only had one stream and it dried up. I'd be at 0% total income then! And that's not good.

2. Automation (work that I don't have to be present for, one time set up and very little management)
*Obvious reasons here. If I can maximize my pay per time worked, I can raise the amount of total income I can earn. Ideally, working 0 for income relates to an infinite pay scale. I can spend a lot of time not working. haha.

3. Longevity (the amount of time between the start of the stream and when it dries up)
*The longer the better here... the shorter the stream, the more often I have to set up another stream.

So, what did I decide on?

I haven't.

That's my issue.

So, what's the benefit to you for this article? The benefit is that I've opened up a a new thought process for you and hopefully you can apply that to your business model.

My goal is to not have to work for my business the rest of my life... I'd like to eventually have a tangible business that I could sell, with a model that was worth something WITHOUT me being there.

Does that make sense to anyone else?

20 Places To Market Your Photography Business For FREE

So, I just say down and started thinking about what I was going to write today. (i.e. I sent a mass email to everyone in my database about the real estate photography asking for any LO's or Agents to contact me for a special rate on photography)

Some of you may not know what an autoresponder is... for that check out http://www.aweber.com and they'll explain it in far more detail than I ever could.

If you don't like autoresponders and prefer something a little more "manageable" you can also use a contact management system like ACT (http://www.act.com/)

Why do I "waste" 19.95 a month (yeah i do monthly billing) on an auto responder service? Because building a business is about REPEAT business. It's about REPEAT customers.

Sure, getting new customers is a great way to expand your business... and you should definitely be doing that on a daily basis. However, you should never be neglecting the people that have ALREADY BOUGHT from you. These are people that have already opened their wallet for you and already have the trust required to spend more money. These are also the people that are most qualified to give you a recommendation/referral to their friends and family! That's HUGE selling power... if you harness it right.

So, how do you stay on top of their minds?

By staying in contact with them... that's how.

How do you stay in contact with them on a regular basis without writing 600 emails every month?

An auto responder.

At this point, some of you are asking: What do you propose I do with this auto responder?

To that I say: SEND YOUR DATABASE VALUE! Give them a reason to remember you... hell, even look forward to your emails!

How do I do that? you say:

There are an infinite number of possibilities that I could use to answer that question. The simple ones are: newsletters, promotions, etc. but everyone is doing that. The point here is to set yourself apart.

What if......

You created a wedding checklist in a nice convenient .pdf format and sent it over to all of your brides.

What if......

You set up a contest and gave something away to a lucky winner?

What if......

You wrote an article on 25 ways to better present your home while listing it (I'll probably do this for my realtors)

What if.....

What if.....

What if.....

Think outside the box people! Get yourself in contact with the people that already spend money with you and they're more than likely going to spend a little more if you ask the right way...

Just food for thought.

Marketing Idea for the day

I'm going to try and update this blog a little more frequently, as I've been a little swamped with some "real world" problems and scheduling conflicts lately. However, I did want to take a chance and post a quick idea that I had last night in hopes that maybe you'd be able to get a few gigs this way.

I was thinking about some of the real estate photography that I do, and trying to refine my marketing towards that segment when I came upon an idea that I hadn't thought about for some reason.

I've used this idea in other ventures, but it never came about for my real estate photography clientèle and yet it is SO simple to apply here.

The idea is a joint venture.

Sounds more complicated than it is though.

The power of a joint venture is that you are able to spread your marketing efforts significantly further than if you were doing it solo. The disadvantage (in some cases) is that you end up having to give a benefit of some sort to the people doing your marketing.

Here's what I plan on doing.

I'm planning on creating a coupon that will be personalized to a specific mortgage office (or loan officer even). Then, I'll issue each loan officer a certain number of coupons.

How it will work.

Loan officers are always looking for things to pitch to Real Estate agents so that the agent will refer a buyer to the loan officer for financing. A lot of the same old thing is being thrown around the industry though (free comps, mailing lists, postcards, etc. I spent too much time in real estate, haha).

What if, though, a loan officer approached a real estate agent with a coupon for a photography package on one of their listings? Say $50 off the normal package price of $250.

This does a few things:

- It makes the loan officer stand out by being able to offer an incentive that not many LO's are able to offer (Lo's incentive to pass your coupon out)
- It enables me to pass out a bunch of "coupons" to LO's and spread the word significantly faster than meeting with agents one on one.
- It enables me to do a shoot for a slight discount, but PROVE my value to the agent and also add them as a warm contact to my database (which makes marketing to them in the future much easier)
- It gives the Agent something that they can TRULY use rather than just some rehashed database or some Just Listed! postcards sent to a few homes around their are.
- It costs the LO NOTHING
- It SAVES the realtor $50 bucks (they love that)
- It MAKES me $200 I wouldn't have normally had

Trust me, this one is hot.... If you are into real estate photography at all, you know that agents are less likely to spend money on frills right now than any time within the last 5 years... yet, now is the time for them to be spending money on GREAT marketing for their properties...

If you're going to use this technique, I would approach a loan officer with this angle:

"If you were looking at an MLS listing of, say 100 homes, and one of those homes had exceptional images, wouldn't it attract your attention significantly more?"

That gets them in the right frame of mind.

What you're trying to do is sell the LO on your product, so that they can sell a Realtor on it. It's impossible to sell something you don't believe in so you need these guys on your side!

Now go out there and get some real estate photography gigs!!!

================================

BY THE WAY:

If you want to post a comment and ask some questions I'd be glad to post responses. I'm looking for a little more interaction here... so IDEAS are encouraged.

Thanks!

================================

Start Making Money With Photography TODAY!
Check Out John Carroll's Easy Photo Biz and Make $200/day or More
Taking Simple Documentary Style Photos!

An update to the $200/day system

Back on December 19th I posted a quasi-review of a system to make $200 a day taking simple photographs. I was slightly skeptical about the system, but it made good sense and seemed to provide good content.

We'll I'm happy to say that I've given in a few months now and I stand behind my recommendation.

If I were to give one opinion about it though, I would say it is a great starting point to get your foot in the door to making some money with photography and it is also a great suppliment to a full on photography business... But it's not very artistically gratifying.

Then again, I don't really find taking pictures of people artistically gratifying either. I'm more of a still life kind of photographer when I'm doing it for enjoyment. ;)

Anyhow, if you haven't already, at least take a look at the kit and see what it's all about. It's a pretty nifty little system.

A spicy tidbit to make searching craigslist easier

Every now and then, I seem to overlook something that makes my day significantly easier and take for granted the value that it ads to my photography business.

This is one of those things.

Have you ever found yourself searching through craigslist looking for photography gigs, trying to find some hidden treasure, a classified that someone put in the wrong place that could give you a head up on the competition?

I've spent upwards of an hour on craigslist trying to filter most of these ads out until I discovered the ease of using google to search craigslist.

Now, I simply go to google and type in something along the lines of:
Photographer needed site:mycity.craigslist.org

What that does is brings up everything that has been indexed on craigslist containing those keywords.

You can also use quotations to narrow your search if you're getting overwhelming results. So for example "Photographer needed" site:mycity.craigslist.org would yeild every posting that contained "photographer needed" in that order and together. Whereas the previous search would include everything that included the word photographer, and the word needed regardless of where it was in the posting.

At that point, all you really have to do is click on each search result and it will take you to that listing.

No wading through garbage, no sorting through different sections. It's simple, streamlined, and an efficient use of your time.

Now go find some gigs!

Great Examples of Guerilla Marketing

Guerilla marketing: unconventional marketing intended to get maximum results for minimal resources. The perfect type of marketing for the beginning photographer looking to make a name for him/her self. I need to better my skills before I charge people for my services!" or "When I shoot assignments, my clients don't purchase that many prints" or "I wish I had something that REALLY set my photography apart from the crowd"...

Those are all common insecurities in photographers professional or amature. The one thing that I can definitely say is that you need to get out and shoot every single day. Hone your skills and step outside your own boundaries every time you shoot, EVEN ON GIGS.

The way I see it, as long as you have your assignment shots covered, take a little time to try something experimental. You'll end up with some really neat images that might end up making you a little extra money, even if you don't think the photos are that great. "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then." I've been cured...

So, we left off a week or so ago with the thought of proactive marketing. I would have updated this sooner, but some computer genius found a great way to steal all of my information and put the she-bosh on my computers functionality. Anyhow...

What is Proactive Marketing?

I'll start with http://www.dictionary.com's definition of proactive: Acting in advance to deal with an expected difficulty. Combine that with marketing and that is essentially what we're talking about.

Wait, you don't know what marketing is? Oh bother....

Marketing, in layman's terms, is: Everything within your sales cycle that establishes a brand or identity and carries out the function of providing a product or service to a consumer. Like that? I made it up myself. :)

Almost anything you do as a "company" could be considered marketing in some form or another. It's a sticky word that I hated learning about. So, for the purposes of this blog, we'll be talking about marketing as it pertains to the sales of your services.

As you'll remember, I was talking to my buddy Jeff a few weeks ago and he was broke as a joke and couldn't figure out a way to bring in more business to save his life! His "marketing plan" was to post some ads on craigslist and sit back and wait.... effective.

Well, I must report that within the last week and a half, Jeff has managed to obtain 5 new photography gigs and he'll probably clear $2200.00 between the lot (meaning total money for all gigs).

So, what did I tell him to do? Be Proactive!

I sent Jeff away with a to-do list of 14 items. These items are:

1. Get business cards made. Can you believe that he didn't have any business cards? He's trying to break into a new industry and has no way of promoting himself. It is ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE to have business cards... and lots of them! Focus on simplicity and quality. Business cards that are too busy or use scripted fonts are hard for clients to read. The average business card only gets about 7 seconds of life... you have to make the most of it. There are plenty of great places to get cards from, some are even free! The most important part of this item, though, is this: PASS THEM OUT TO EVERYONE. You're in line at the grocery store? Give one to the person in front and behind you. You're out in the club? Pick up a hottie by asking to take their picture (a good portfolio builder if you find the right one). At work? Leave them on co-workers desks.

2. Make a list. Make a list of every single person you know and start yourself an Excel spreadsheet for future clients. Include different columns for each piece of vital information: Name, Address, City, State, Zip, Phone, email, Contact Date, First Shoot Date, First Order Value, etc. If you don't know how to use Excel, here's a decent starting point. If you can't find the info there, google it. :)

3. Make at least 50 calls. Yep, the one thing that everyone in the world hates to do. The difference here is that these aren't cold calls. These are warm calls to people that you know. These calls should be for the sole purpose of letting everyone know that you are a photographer and asking for referrals. Ask questions like, "Do you know of anyone that needs photos taken?", etc. Don't make this too formal, just call to touch base and mention it. You're allowed to call people like this for no reason so stop feeling silly.

4. Go to 100 Doors. Canvas a professional building. I wouldn't recommend going from home to home, this is more for corporate events and other things. Walk in, ask to speak with the manager and tell them that "you'll be in the building(plaza, strip mall, etc) doing headshots for business cards and promotional materials on the week of __/___/___. Prices are: ____". Try to book them on the spot. ***This is how I got most of my business when I started.*** It's a drag, and you'll get shot down 8 out of 10 times... but the 2 times you make it happen pay for the whole day.

5. Shoot 2 pro-bono gigs a month. What? I thought this was a blog about making money in photography... It is, my friends, but there is no way to get your name out faster than doing pro-bono or barter work. Don't just shoot anyone for free... that's bad for the market. Shoot free events for charities and non profits or even use it as a negotiation tool for securing bigger fish. "I'm so confident that you'll love my work that I'll shoot the first even for free". The object here is to make the freebie pay for its self with word of mouth. Shooting a portrait session for free isn't going to do diddly squat for your marketing...

6. Start looking for a niche. What you're looking for is a sector of the market that isn't saturated in your area. A sector that pays well and is easy to shoot. While this isn't a form of instant money, this is set-up for the long haul. It's easy to default to "wedding photographer" and compete with everyone and their brother in a market that is highly competitive, with tons of talent. Look elsewhere for people that see value in photography out of necessity. Places like insurance companies, leasing and lending companies and people that just plain don't have the time to document assets for appraisals, etc.

7. Start your online presence. You need a place for people to go to take a look at your work. We're living in 2008 now, you should at least have a blog. There are plenty of free website templates out there that would easily accomplish a starter site. The end goal obviously being that you need your own site built, but for starters, your clients aren't going to notice that much of a difference. We're trying to keep this as cheap as possible. The first thing you need to do is head on over to GoDaddy or 1Coms or NameCheap and get yourself a domain. Then, find some hosting, or even redirect your domain to your personal webspace that your internet provider should be allowing you. Now, go get a free website template and start your site. If you've got coding knowledge, awesome... If not, do a google search to learn a little CSS and HTML and you should be all set.

-----------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------

Okay, that's only 7 of the things that I gave Jeff.... but that should keep you MORE than busy for the next few weeks. I'll be making a post in another week or so with the following seven items on the to-do list. If you remember nothing else from this post, just remember this: You need to be aggressive in getting your name out there, tell everyone you know that you're a photographer. Mention it to everyone you meet. Make it a topic of discussion any chance you get. Utilize your contact with others and leverage that to make yourself successful.

Just a word or two about commitment, if you're going to make this into something serious, you're going to have to take this seriously. Get out there and just bite the bullet and DO IT! At this point, there is nothing stopping you from becoming a photographer and making money with your camera! So, make it happen... and post some comments telling me a story about your adventure into this new and exciting industry.

It's 5:34 in the morning and I haven't slept yet... I'm going to bed. haha.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://themoneycam.blogspot.com/2008/01/back-in-business-ive-been-cured.html' title='Back in business! I know it has been a busy time of the year, but it's back to crunch time for anyone that wants to make money in photography!

Just the other day, a friend of mine, who has been having some trouble getting started in photography, asked if I would go get some coffee with him. He needed some pointers on how to get paying gigs because his bills are coming due, and he's broke! Naturally, I can't pass up a steaming, black and white hot chocolate from the local Starbucks, so I obliged.

After chatting for a while about what he was currently doing to get business I could see the problem. Jeff (fake name) was making the same mistakes almost all new photographers do. The same mistakes I made when I was new. He was posting a few classified ads on craigslist and waiting for the gigs to come rolling in! Only, they weren't...

We talked for close to 2 hours and at the end of the day he left with 6 pages of college rule notepad chalked full of ideas for him to try and a to-do list 14 items long.

That might not sound exciting to you... but it got me thinking about how many other photographers might be in the same situation.

The bottom line is that until Jeff carves out a niche for himself, he's going to have to make some coin doing whatever kinds of gigs he can find.

I encourage this for a few reasons:

1. It offers Jeff some actual, real life experience as to what it's like shooting under different conditions. I know personally, I hate shooting weddings. Weddings are GREAT money if you're good... but they also have a way of giving me ulcers.

2. It builds Jeff's referral list. What photographer in their right mind is going to turn down work, just because it's not their niche?

3. It builds Jeff's portfolio. Do I need to say more on this subject?

4. It pays the bills...

Just what he needs!

The Biggest Mistake Struggling Photographers Make Is NOT Being A Proactive Marketer

Many photographers take for granted the power of sales and marketing. They jump into the game thinking that they can get by on talent alone. The sad reality, though, is that talent is actually second best to marketing and sales when it comes to making a living at photography. If a photographer can't sell his service, how will he make any money with it?

If your goal is to MAKE PHOTOGRAPHY YOUR LIVING, you'll need to know a few of the basics. Wrap your mind around that concept, and I'll be back next time with a run down of easy to follow marketing ideas to get (or improve) your photography business.

Make $200 a day taking simple photos

Recently, I've been looking into simple ways to make a little extra change as a photographer. I figure, the simple fact of the matter is, that I probably won't have a cult following as a photographer for quite some time. I'll need to build rapport with clients in specific niches in order to gain that kind of following and residual work flow.

So, In the mean time, I will have to make due with making little bits of change from various places. This isn't to say that lots of money can't be made, however.

In the guide Taking simple photos for $200 a day! John Carroll walks you through a simple step by step program on how to be in high demand as a photographer for national companies on a local level. He includes contacts to make getting started much more simple, and compounds that with a wealth of information to guide even the newest photographer to the hidden money pot within this realm of photography.

The best part about this system is that almost anyone can do it, even if you don't have spectacular photography technique, or expensive equipment. The whole system revolves around documentary style photos. As you can see from the examples on his site, nearly anyone could expose a car or home or bus or tractor well enough for an insurance company!

If you have basic computer skills (which if you're reading this, you do), have a camera, and a few other really low tech tools (like a tape measure), you can get started Taking simple photos for $200 a day!

The Money Cam Official Launch!

The Money Cam is a blog dedicated to teaching amature photographers (and professionals) how to use their skills to supplement their income.
